Smoky was a Wonderful human being who never new a stranger. Also, Smoky was a gifted athlete. He was one of the best pure shooters to ever step on to a basketball court. Never did understand why WVU never signed him. He was also a phenomenal baseball and softball player as well. His athletic achievements will never be forgotten. RIP Smokey. My condolences to the Families

So Sorry for your loss! "Smokey" was in the top three basketball players to come out of Preston County. Bucky Bolyard, Dave Miller and "Smokey" My brother Roger "Hoppy" worked with Smokey for years at Sheidow. We also played pick-up games of basketball and softball with him. One of the most gifted players that I ever played sports with. West Virginia University made a big mistake by not getting Smokey and Dave Miller to play for them. Hot Rod and Jerry West had just finished playing for WV and they thought that everybody was going to be like them. Smokey was the best pure shooter that I ever saw come out of Preston County. Joe also had a great since of humor! My brother told me about a boy that was all state in track telling him and Smokey about how fast he was. Smokey told him that he would race him at the Old Kingwood Football Field. My brother and Smokey drove the former all state player down to the field. My brother told me that Smokey beat the guy so bad and Smokey was wearing work boots. The all state player never mentioned it to anyone at the plant. Joe never bragged about to anyone, he always let his ability do his talking. Will miss you Smokey, You will always be a legend to the kids of Preston County! RIP My Friend! I met Smokey when I began playing softball in Morgantown. I quickly learned that Smokey was many things: a superior athlete, an entertainer, a friend. He also possessed the ability to combine all of these characteristics into his own persona. I will always remember one night he did just that. We were playing a friendly game of pick-up basketball in the old Sabraton Jr. High gym. Smokey was filling up the basket, as usual, and the other team was becoming frustrated with how easy he was making it look. One particular trip down court, the player guarding Smokey said to him, as he was about to cross half-court, "You make it from there and I'll kiss your @$$." No sooner had he said it, Smokey jumped up and let the ball fly. Then Smokey hit the floor, spun around, and pulled his gym shorts down. The next sound we all heard was SWISH, followed by the loudest roar of laughter that gym had heard in a long time. As I said, Smokey, our friend, often brought joy to us in the middle of athletic events while excelling with his lauded abilities. Rest easy, my friend ,and may God bless your family in this time of loss.
