Obituary of Perry Mathew

Perry Mathew, 89, of Masontown, WV, passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. He was born in Masontown, WV on June 14, 1919, the son of the late Albert Ross and Mable Deavers Mathew. He worked at Preston County Coal and Coke, and he retired from General Motors. He was Protestant by Faith, and he served in the US Navy as a Seaman 1st class in WWII. He is survived by two daughters, Maxine Hovatter, of Walled Lake, MI and Martha Van Wagener of FL; a son, William “Bill” Mathew, of Fairfield, OH; a brother, Charles “Bud” Mathew, and spouse Merle, of Warren, OH; a half sister, Betty Shaffer of Masontown, WV; a half brother, Ray Mathew and spouse Kathy, of Sand Fork, WV; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a dear companion, Grace Lambert, of Masontown, WV. He was preceded in death by three wives, Madeline Mathew, Mildred Mathew, and Marie Mathew, a sister Gladys Stone, a sister Iva Martin, and a half brother, Chester Shaffer. Friends may call at the Field Funeral Home in Masontown on Sunday, June 7, from 5 - 9 pm where services will be held on Monday, June 8 at 2 pm with the Rev. Barry Adkins officiating. Interment will follow at the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Kingwood, WV. Military rites will be conducted by the Preston County VFW Honor Guard, Preston County Chapter 977 Vietnam Veterans of America, and the West Virginia Army National Guard Camp Dawson.
