Obituary of Ursula Hanchett

Lifted on the wings of angels, Ursula Jutta Bunge Hanchett was called to her heavenly home on August 23, 2010. She was born June 28, 1927 in Zernin, Germany a daughter of Lucie and Willie Bunge. It was in Berlin at the end of WWII that she met the love of her life, Clarence G. Hanchett Jr., who was serving in the Army. Ursula was the first German-American war bride to step foot on American soil at La Guardian Air Port in New York where Clarence brought her and their daughter to live in America. They experienced life in the military and were blessed to have lived many wonderful places, including for a time in Japan where she was the first non-oriental to be awarded the designation of Sensai in Ikebana (floral arrangement). She was a woman of many talents. Along with floral arranging, she was a gifted seamstress creating lovely dresses, coats, and suits. For many years she worked as an assistant manager at the House of Fabrics in Falls Church, VA, and was the maker of many quilts which are cherished by her family. She taught herself to knit and crochet and as recent as 2 years ago crocheted over 100 scarves not only for her family, but donated many to children in need in Preston County and in Atlanta, GA. Ursula was also a great cook of both German and American cuisine. Missing her, but knowing they will be re-united again, are her husband of 65 years, Charlie Hanchett of Kingwood; five daughters and spouses, Rosemary and Larry Shaffer of Kingwood, Marsha and Chris Rose of Kingwood, Teresa and Jimmy Hastings of Lewis, DE, Patricia and Timmy Blake of Fredericksburg, VA, and Kristen and Efi of Tarzana, CA; two sons and spouses, David and Linda Hanchett of Clifton, VA, and Brandon and Pam Hanchett of Leesburg, VA; 17 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.
