Obituary of Jack Newcome

Jack Richard Newcome, 76, of Masontown, passed away Monday, March 17, 2014 at Monongalia General Hospital in Morgantown. He was born in Newburg, WV on August 16, 1937, a son of the late Mary (Emerson) and Wilbur Seymour Newcome. Jack graduated Salutatorian from Newburg High School class of 1955 where he was a standout basketball player. He then attended Fairmont State College under the Benedum Scholarship where he was a Thespian and played basketball. His "Claim to Fame" was during a Fairmont State versus WVU Freshman scrimmage at Stansbury Hall. He held the then freshman Jerry West to the toughest 42 points he ever scored. He served three years in the U.S. Army where he was a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles. He also served in Germany as a military policeman. Jack worked at Sterling Faucet. He was then employed by Mon Power for over 35 years and retired as an operating foreman. He is survived by four daughters, Jacqueline Newcome-Kokosko of Masontown, Janet Beth Holt and husband Joe of Berkley Springs, WV, Mary Adeline "Molly" Vandergrift of Morgantown and Haley Ann Vandergrift of Fairmont; one son, Shawn David Newcome and wife Kelli of Masontown; one sister, Glenna Ruth Calvert of Newburg; one brother, Mitchell Allen Newcome and wife Linda of Masontown; 10 grandchildren, Samantha, Tyler, Lauren, Adriana, Heidi, Tasha, Alex, Karoline, Karter and Addison; his former wife and close friend Diane Newcome Shelton of Houston, TX; three nephews and four nieces. He is preceded in death by his twin sister Janet Rose Newcome and a brother in law Butch Calvert. Friends may call at the Field Funeral Home in Masontown on Thursday March 20, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday March 21, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the Funeral Home with Pastor Kelly Gamble officiating. Interment will follow at the Damon Cemetery in Newburg. Military rites will be conducted by the Preston County VFW Honor Guard and the Preston County Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 977.
