Joseph Sumers Wolfe, 89, of Severn, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, April 26, 2026.

Born on April 10, 1937, in Arthurdale, West Virginia, he was the youngest of three children of the late Clinton and Edith Irene Wolfe and a first-generation descendant of Arthurdale homesteaders.

Joe was a devoted member of Severna Park Baptist Church, the Arthurdale Heritage Society, and the Phoenix Society. He retired after a distinguished 29-year career with the National Security Agency. In retirement, he dedicated countless hours to volunteer service, including Meals on Wheels, the Disabled Veterans Transportation Network, the Literacy Council of Frederick, the Louisville Rotary Club, and several churches throughout his life.

He found joy in reading his Bible, traveling, and participating in Volksmarches in all 50 states. He also enjoyed playing board and card games with family, bike riding and took great pride in watching his children and grandchildren participate in sporting events.

Joe will be deeply missed by his loving family and many friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Vivian (McNair) Wolfe; his second wife, Maxine (Anderson) Wolfe; his third wife, Mary (Davis) Wolfe; his sons, Larry Wolfe and Paul Seibert; and his sisters, Ruby Weaver and Delores Smith.

He is survived by his children: JoBeth (Donn II) Hobson, Roger Wolfe, Glenice (Jeff) VanDorsten, Roy (Karen) Seibert, Vincent Seibert, Kenneth Livengood Jr., Todd (Becky) Livengood, and Amy (Dwayne) Shephard; twelve grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Family and friends will be received on Friday, May 1, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Field Funeral Home in Masontown, West Virginia. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 2, at 1:00 p.m. at Arthurdale Community Presbyterian Church in Arthurdale, West Virginia, with Rev. Dr. David Spence Officiating. Interment to follow at Arthurdale Cemetery.
