Margaret “Cathy” Catherine Johnson, 77, of Arthurdale, WV, formerly of St. Petersburg, FL., peacefully passed away Monday, September 8, 2025, at Kingwood Healthcare Center, Kingwood, WV.
She was born in Troy, OH on April 12, 1948, the daughter of the late John and Evelyn (Whitaker) Birchfield.
Cathy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a medical assistant for 22 years in Florida. Cathy had a heart of gold, always doing what she could for others. She loved animals, butterflies, flowers and being outside. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with all that loved her, whether in person or on the phone.
Cathy is survived by two daughters, Melissa Ann Williams of St. Petersburg, FL and Ronda Kay Mitchell and husband, Noah of Brooksville, FL; one son, Roger Lee Welch and wife, Jennifer of St. Petersburg, FL; step daughter, Christinia Howdershelt and husband, Justin; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Linda and Marvin “Brownie” Brown, Dennis and Linda Johnson, Allen and Teresa Johnson, Cathy and Bob Tokarick and Doris Birchfield; a special little boy, Tanner Howdershelt and his mother, whom Cathy looked at as a daughter.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Chuck” Johnson; one daughter, Tammy Fay Sheppard and one brother, David Birchfield.
To honor Cathy’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or services held. Field Funeral Home will provide professional and compassionate cremation services.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Cathy’s memory can be made to a charity near to her heart; the Preston County Animal Shelter, 278 Poor Farm Road, Kingwood, WV 26537.
