Judy Anne Shackelford, 81, of Grafton, WV, graduated to her heavenly home on Saturday, May 10, 2025, with her loving husband by her side.
She was born in Kingwood, on December 22, 1943, a daughter of the late Ezra Guy and Goldie Isabell (Ridenour) Sypolt.
Judy grew up on her family’s farm on Red Rock Road just outside of Rowlesburg. She graduated from Rowlesburg High School and attended Fairmont State College before marrying her sweetheart Chuck Shackelford on August 26, 1965. They were blessed to have spent almost 60 years together.
Judy worked at various businesses in the Grafton area, including Bartlett Funeral Home and the Taylor County Extension Office. In 1986, she was hired into the Telecommunications Department at West Virginia University. While at WVU, she worked with Tim Williams, helping to establish the first voice mail system in the history of the university. She retired from WVU in 2010. She completed her bachelor’s degree in business in 1989 from Fairmont State College.
Judy was an active member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church. She was a member of the Women’s Mission Society, served as church treasurer, assisted in leading the youth group, served as a liaison with the World Vision Organization in Philippi and helped organize the building of the parade float for the Memorial Day Parade. However, the role that she enjoyed the most at the church was working in the bus ministry alongside her husband, Chuck.
She took joy in bringing children and adults to church where they could get a good breakfast, hear the gospel, and have the opportunity to accept God’s plan of salvation. She and Chuck retired from the bus ministry in 2021 due to her health issues, but her heart was always with the bus ministry. In addition to her job and work at the church, she enjoyed traveling around the state with her husband, camping, fishing and spending time with her beloved grandchildren.
She is survived by her loving husband of almost 60 years, Charles Lee “Chuck” Shackelford; a daughter, Melanie Saffle and husband, Chuck of Newburg; a grandson, Carson Saffle and Destiny; a granddaughter, Courtney Rosencrance and husband, Bryan; a beautiful great grandson, Bodie Rosencrance; two brothers in -law, Paul Wiles and Richard Shackelford; niece, Paula Courtney and husband, Michael; three great nephews, several great-great nieces and nephews, and a special “Bonus” daughter, Louise Lansberry and husband, James.
She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Ezra Guy Sypolt Jr.; a sister, Rose Wiles; father and mother in-law, Charles W. and Arlene Shackelford and several close cousins from Preston County.
Friends and family may call at the Oak Grove Baptist Church, 1081 Oak Grove Rd. Independence, WV 26374, from 9:00 am until the funeral service at 11:00am on Thursday, May 15, 2025, with Pastor Craig Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
