Obituary of Michael James Whetsell

Michael "Mike" "Taz" James Whetsell, 30, of Morgantown, son, father, coach, mentor, and forever positive spirit, left this world Wednesday, April 19, 2017 to a better life in Heaven. Michael was born in Oakland, MD on December 31, 1986, a son of Lawrence James Whetsell and Sue Ellen (Ringer) Whetsell of Reedsville. He was a 2005 graduate of Preston High School and had worked at Fastenal in Morgantown for four years. It was a job he loved with co-workers he thought very highly of. Mike touched many lives in his time here. He was actively involved in youth sports and coached many children over the past 10 years, including his son, Amaré Whetsell, whom was the love of his life. He pushed several kids to their limits and helped them set goals with all intentions of guiding them through. He always said "trust the process", "hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard" and he lived by those statements helping children achieve their goals on and off the court and field. Recently, Mike fulfilled his dreams of becoming head coach for a youth football program and had already began dedicating himself in all aspects of the league. He always saw the bigger picture and light at the end of the tunnel. He wasn't afraid of hard work and change, which led him to become a lot of children's favorite coach. When Mike wasn't giving his all to kids across the area, he was working to provide for his family. He was setting goals for himself and never stopped unless he reached them. He always wanted to be there for his son Amaré, fiancé Cassie and unborn child, that he prayed for years to be conceived. In addition to his parents he is survived by his son, Amare' Whetsell of Morgantown, fiancé, Cassie Taylor of Morgantown; grandmother, Jane Satterfield of Fairmont; step brother, Jamie Myron Whetsell of Terra Alta; aunts and uncles, Sheila and Randy Wagner of Masontown, Jeff and Selena Satterfield of Fairmont, Sylvia Moore of Uniontown, PA, Bo (Donald) and Theresa Ringer of Cranesville, David Ringer of Laurinburg, NC and Wanda and Doug Mayle of McHenry, MD; Godparents, John and Barbara Beerbower of Terra Alta; "aunt" Dorothy "Dot" Ringer of Terra Alta and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Jack Satterfield; maternal grandparents, Donald and Emma Ringer and "uncle" Denzil Ringer. Friends may call at the Mill Chapel United Brethren Church, 6732 Kingwood Pike, Reedsville, WV 26547 on Monday, April 24, 2017 from 2 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at the Church with Pastor David Kisamore officiating. To honor his wishes he will then be cremated. The family requests that everyone attending the visitation and funeral service wear their team colors, jerseys or sports apparel in his honor. In lieu of flowers, it is also requested that donations be made to scholarship funds in Mike's memory which are to be set up in the near future or donations may be made to the family at the you caring link on Facebook.
