Obituary of Melvin J. Shaffer

Melvin J. Shaffer, 87, of Masontown, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, November 14, 2015. He was born in Osage, WV on June 6, 1928, a son of the late Roy John and the late Helen (McCrobie) Shaffer. He spent his lifetime doing things he loved to do. At the top of his list would be spending time with his family, working with stone, carpentry work and gardening. He worked at the Preston County Coal and Coke for many years where he enjoyed experimenting with the scrubbers and cleaning systems. Melvin is survived by loving wife, Donna C. (Turner) Shaffer; two sons, Frederick Neal Shaffer and wife Florinda and Nicholas Friend and wife Shelby all of Masontown; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren, two great grandchildren; brother, Carl Shaffer and wife Betty of Charles Town; brother-in-law, John Garner of Masontown; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Shaffer of Masontown and Ellen Shaffer of Reedsville and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one daughter, Sheila Shaffer; one son, Cedric J. Shaffer; one sister, Leah Jane Garner and four brothers, Dorsey Allen Shaffer, Clarence Shaffer, Tommy Shaffer and John H. Shaffer. Friends may call at the Field Funeral Home in Masontown on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 5 p.m. until the 6:30 p.m. service time. To honor Melvin's wishes cremation services will be provided.
